Berstane Lodges

Tucked into open farmland off Berstane Road, just outside Kirkwall, these glamping pods give you the romance of a cabin in the countryside without giving up any comfort. The curved, timber-clad pods sit facing the view, each with its own deck and hot tub, and on a clear winter night the sky overhead can light up with the Northern Lights, exactly as the photos show.

Inside

Step in and the whole pod is lined in warm pine, ceiling and walls, which makes it feel cosy the moment you arrive. There's a proper little kitchen along one side, induction hob, oven, microwave, fridge and kettle, so you can cook in rather than head out every night. A dining table and chairs sit by the glazed doors, and a sofa and wall-mounted TV round out the snug living end.

Where you'll sleep

The pod is set up for two, an intimate, well-judged space for a couple. It's heated, comfortable and made for hunkering down while the weather does its thing outside.

Step outside

The deck is where you'll spend the good evenings. Slip into the hot tub with a glass of something and watch the light change over the fields, the loch and the sea beyond. A bistro table lets you take breakfast outdoors when it's calm, and the dark rural skies are about as good as Orkney gets for stargazing.

The setting
