Buxa Farm Chalets sit out at Clestrain in Orphir, single-storey stone chalets looking across open farmland to the water beyond. It's a working-farm setting with big Orkney skies, and the chalet itself is roomy, warm and set up to sleep four in real comfort.

Inside

The open-plan living space is the standout: a bright sitting and dining area with a deep blue sofa, a wooden table for six and large windows on two sides, one looking onto the stone steading, the other across green fields. The kitchen is a smart sage-green shaker design with an integrated oven and hob, microwave and plenty of worktop — nautical touches like an anchor clock keep it in keeping with the coast. Wood floors run throughout.

Where you'll sleep

There are two bedrooms across the chalet. The double has a wooden headboard, wall lights and striped navy bedding under a large feature mirror; the second is set up as a twin with matching striped linen and a shared bedside unit. The bathroom is a real talking point — a full bath with shower screen set against a floor-to-ceiling stormy-sea mural, with open shelves of fluffy towels alongside.

Step outside

The chalets open onto gravelled grounds with grass beyond, and the bay sits just past the buildings — wide, quiet and made for watching the weather roll through.

The setting

Clestrain and Orphir lie on the south-west Mainland, an easy run to Stromness and the Neolithic sites of the West Mainland, with the Houton ferry to Hoy and the South Isles close by. There's a great sense of space and birdlife out here, and plenty to fill a week across Orkney.
