Congesquoy Barn

Congesquoy Barn is a beautifully finished modern barn conversion in the countryside near Stromness, sitting right beside the water with wide views over the loch and sea. Crisp white render, a slate roof and big windows give it a clean, contemporary look, and a railed patio with a picnic bench out front is made for long summer evenings. There's plenty of off-road parking on the gravel, and a smart navy front door to welcome you in.

Inside

The heart of the house is a bright open-plan living space under exposed timber beams. A large grey corner sofa makes a comfortable spot to relax, and it flows straight into a stylish kitchen, pale shaker units, oak worktops, an island with bar seating and full appliances, so cooking for a crowd is no trouble. It's a genuinely lovely room to spend time in, light-filled and looking out to the surrounding landscape.

Where you'll sleep

Three bedrooms sleep up to six. The doubles are calm and tasteful, one with pretty floral bedding, a velvet armchair and a skylight that pulls in the daylight. There are two bathrooms, including a smart grey shower room with oak flooring and a heated towel rail, so a full house never has to queue. A washing machine is provided for longer stays.

Step outside

The waterside setting is the showstopper. The patio looks out across the loch towards the open sea, with farmland all around and birdlife on the water, an exceptionally peaceful place to sit out with a drink as the light fades.

You're a short drive from Stromness, with its harbour, galleries, ferry to the mainland and characterful old streets, and well placed for the West Mainland's Neolithic sites. Quiet, scenic and central enough for touring.
