Cottiscarth Cottages

Cottiscarth sits high on the hill at Settiscarth, above Finstown, with big open views across the fields and moorland of the West Mainland. Parking is at the door and the position is wonderfully quiet — the kind of spot where you really feel the space and light of inland Orkney.

Inside

The heart of the cottage is a bright open-plan living and dining room, where a large picture window frames the hills and grazing. There's a comfortable sofa and armchair grouped to make the most of the view, a dining table and chairs, and a wall-mounted TV. The kitchen is modern and well equipped, with pale units, an electric oven and hob, a kettle, toaster, coffee machine and good worktop space — a wall clock above the sink and a window over the fields keep it cheerful while you cook.

Where you'll sleep

Sleeping up to six, the bedrooms are fresh and comfortable, with floral bedding, mirrored wardrobes and windows that look out over the open countryside. The room we saw has a double and a single, with the hills visible from the pillow.

Step outside

The real treat here is the outlook. From the windows and the grounds you look out across rolling farmland to the moorland ridges of the West Mainland, with sea glimpsed in the distance on clear days. There's garden space around the cottage to sit out and take it in.

The setting

You're a short drive from Finstown, a handy village set on the Bay of Firth roughly halfway between Kirkwall and Stromness — well placed for reaching the Neolithic sites at the Ness of Brodgar, Maeshowe and Skara Brae, as well as both main towns.
