Grainbank Mews

Grainbank Mews is a neat guest suite at Grainbank House, on the western edge of Kirkwall where the houses give way to fields and big Orkney skies. The setting is quiet and slightly elevated, with one memorable photo catching a fierce pink-and-purple sunset over the bare winter trees and the lights of the town below. There's parking and a garden, and you're only minutes from the centre.

Rooms & comfort

The rooms sit up under the eaves and are calm and well finished, with sloping ceilings, soft grey carpet and good oak bed frames. The double we saw is dressed in white with a plum throw and a scatter cushion, with reading lights over the headboard and a welcome tray of tea and coffee things set out on a side table. There's also a twin/triple arrangement with single beds, neat bedside tables and clip-on reading lamps — comfortable and flexible for the way you want to sleep.

The location

You're on the doorstep of Kirkwall, with St Magnus Cathedral, the shops, restaurants and the harbour all a short hop away. Being on the edge of town means easy parking and a peaceful night, with everything still within reach — including the ferries for trips out to the other islands.

Good to know

There's private parking, Wi-Fi, a garden and a washing machine, breakfast provisions, and a handsome wooden dresser set up as a breakfast or hospitality station with cups, supplies and a table to sit at. Sleeping two as standard, with extra single-bed space available.
