The bedrooms have real character. One has a cheerful botanical wallpaper behind a black iron bedstead, fresh white linen and a window that draws in plenty of light; another sits up under the eaves with a skylight, the same pretty floral feature wall and a comfortable double dressed with crisp bedding and towels. The bathrooms are a treat in their own right, with seagull-print walls, tongue-and-groove panelling painted in soft teal, a clear glass shower and a vintage-style mirror over the basin. There's a TV, a washer and free WiFi for guests.

Where you'll sleep

Expect doubles done with care and a little personality, paired with bright, fresh bathrooms. A sunny dining spot at the back looks straight out through patio doors onto the garden, with the breakfast table set against the greenery and a vase of tulips on the cloth.

Step outside

The enclosed back garden is a calm place to sit, with lawn, planting and a painted fence for shelter, and Orkney's coast is never far. One look out toward the dramatic Yesnaby cliffs and sea stack gives you a taste of the wild scenery within a short drive.

You're a short hop from the centre of Kirkwall, with St Magnus Cathedral, the harbour, shops and restaurants all within reach, plus quick access to the ferries and the roads out to the West Mainland's beaches and archaeology.
