Lilly's Lodges Orkney Butterfly Lodge

Butterfly Lodge is one of the timber glamping pods at Lilly's Lodges, set high on the green slopes at Redland Firth with sheep grazing the hill behind it. You arrive to a smart arched pod clad in honey-coloured larch, wrapped in its own decked garden behind a solid timber privacy screen, with the land falling away towards the firth in the distance. Pull up, step onto the deck and the only sounds are the wind and the sheep.

Inside

The pod keeps everything within easy reach. A neat galley kitchen runs along one side with a hob, oven, sink and a microwave under the curved pine ceiling, lit by a roof window that pulls in the daylight. There's a kettle and the basics for cooking in, and the warm wood lining gives the whole space a snug, cabin feel.

Where you'll sleep

Sleeping is for up to four. A double bed sits in a cosy panelled nook off the kitchen, dressed in fresh floral linen and finished with a couple of cheerful cushions, with a second sleeping space tucked further along the pod. The en-suite shower room is bright and simple, with a good mains shower over a clean tiled tray.

Step outside

The decking is the heart of it. Sit out behind the screen with a cup of tea and look across rolling farmland to a glint of sea on the horizon, with astilbe and pots of colour softening the edges. It's a properly dog-friendly spot too, with room for them to settle on the deck beside you.

The setting

You're a short drive from Finstown, the handy little village at the head of the Bay of Firth that makes a natural base for exploring the West Mainland, with Kirkwall and Stromness both within reach for shops, ferries and sights.
