Lower Cottage

Lower Cottage is a traditional Orkney bungalow that sits low against the land, part stone and part rendered, with a drystone wall running along the front and open country all around. Arrive on a clear day and the sky seems enormous, with the sea glinting in the distance and sheep grazing the green fields beyond the fence.

Inside

The living room is bright and uncluttered, with two striped sofas, a side table, a lamp for softer evenings and warm wood-effect flooring throughout. It's a relaxed, easy space to settle into after a day out. The kitchen is neat and modern, with white units, a wood worktop, a washing machine and a fold-down table set beneath a window that looks out to the hills, so you can take in the view while you cook.

Where you'll sleep

With two bedrooms, the cottage sleeps four, a good fit for a small family or a couple of couples. The shower room is fresh and white, with a large glass shower enclosure and a window framing the old stone wall outside.

Step outside

This is where the cottage really comes into its own. The fields around it run down towards the coast, dotted with native sheep, and the view stretches over open ground to the sea and the line of hills beyond. It's the sort of spot where you'll want to just stand and take it in.

You're out in the quiet countryside of Orkney, surrounded by farmland and big coastal views, with the freedom to walk, watch wildlife and unwind well away from the bustle. The islands' main towns and sights are within reach by car.
