0Mingro
About this property
Mingro is a traditional Orkney longhouse on Stronsay, whitewashed at one end with bare flagstone gable and a moss-flecked stone-tiled roof, the cheerful yellow door giving it real character. It sits low in the landscape with grass and rough shore close by, exactly the kind of old island cottage people come north hoping to find.
Inside
The living space is open-plan and full of warmth. A wood-burning stove is the centrepiece, glowing away with a basket of logs beside it, set against a sunny yellow wall hung with painted plates and folk-art touches. A solid pine table and chairs sit under a pendant light, and the kitchen runs along behind with a deep butler sink, hob and microwave. It's a homely, characterful room built for slow evenings after a day in the wind.
Where you'll sleep
There's one double bedroom, making this a snug retreat for two. The cottage sleeps two in comfort, with a washing machine on hand for longer stays and pets welcome, so the dog can come too.
Step outside
This is where Stronsay earns its keep. The surrounding coast is extraordinary, from the dramatic natural rock arch of the Vat of Kirbister to wide tidal sands that empty out to mirror-flat pools at low water, and quiet lochs reflecting the island's huge skies. A hot tub means you can soak it all in whatever the weather.
The setting
Stronsay is one of the gentler northern isles of Orkney, known for its beaches, birdlife and peace. Reached by ferry or the short flight from Kirkwall, it's a place to slow right down, walk the shore and watch for seals and seabirds.
Perfect for
Couples, and dog owners, after a genuine island bolthole for two. With a sea view, hot tub, wood-burner, garden and pet-friendly welcome, Mingro suits anyone wanting traditional Orkney character and proper quiet on one of the northern isles.
