Morvin Self-Catering

Morvin is a snug timber-clad self-catering unit at Finstown, set on the edge of open grassland with a raised decked walkway leading to the door. From the deck you look straight out over rolling green fields towards the hills, and there is a quiet, away-from-it-all feel even though you are close to the village. It sleeps two in a single, well-planned space.

Inside

The interior is bright and characterful under a vaulted, beamed ceiling. A black leather sofa faces into the room, and a neat kitchen area runs along one side with a microwave, a kettle and a small toaster on the worktop, finished with tongue-and-groove panelling painted a soft sage green. Coastal prints line the walls and a drum pendant light hangs overhead. Patio doors bring in plenty of daylight and open onto the deck.

Where you'll sleep

The double bed sits in its own alcove at the end of the room, built over storage drawers and dressed in grey, with a wall light above and scatter cushions. It is a clever, cabin-like layout that keeps the sleeping area tucked away while everything stays on one level.

Step outside

The decking is a highlight, running along the side of the building with a couple of chairs set out and an uninterrupted view across the field to the hills. It is a fine spot for a morning coffee or to watch the weather roll across the Mainland.

The setting

Finstown sits roughly midway between Kirkwall and Stromness, making it a handy base for exploring both ends of the Mainland. From here it is an easy drive to Finstown's shop and on to the wider sights of Orkney.
