Nether Onston Cottage

Nether Onston Cottage sits on a wide, open croft near the Loch of Stenness, with grass running right up to the water's edge. Pull in past the dry-stone dyke and you'll find a long, single-storey whitewashed cottage with a stout chimney, joined by a separate timber chalet that adds extra living space. There's plenty of room to park and breathe out here.

Inside

The cottage is laid out across one level, so everything is easy to reach. There's a proper kitchen for cooking your own meals, a comfortable sitting area with a TV, and WiFi throughout. The adjoining timber chalet gives you a second space to spread out, which is handy when there are five of you.

Where you'll sleep

Three bedrooms sleep up to five, so it works well for a family or two couples sharing. There's a washing machine on site too, which makes longer stays much simpler.

Step outside

The big lawn wraps around the buildings, with a picnic bench out front and that loch view stretching away. On still evenings the sunsets here are something else, with whooper swans drifting on the water. And being this far from streetlights, it's a genuine spot for catching the Northern Lights when the sky plays along.

The setting

Stenness puts you in the heart of mainland Orkney's Neolithic landscape, a short drive from the Standing Stones of Stenness, the Ring of Brodgar and the Ness of Brodgar dig. Kirkwall and Stromness are both an easy run by car.

A family of five or a couple of couples who want space, dark skies and quiet water on the doorstep, with parking, WiFi, a washer and a real kitchen to settle in for a proper Orkney week.
