Old School - Exclusive 5 Room private suite

The Old School at Burray is exactly what the name suggests, the village's former schoolhouse turned into a private suite for two. You'll spot it from the road by the pale-blue gate and the hand-painted 'Old School' sign, with a polytunnel in the garden and the South Ronaldsay hills behind. It's a single-storey place that has clearly been looked after.

Rooms & comfort

This is an exclusive booking, so the suite is yours alone, one bedroom sleeping two with the run of the place. The shower room is bright and modern, with a roomy walk-in shower, heated towel rail and a big mirror over the sink. There's a sunny garden room dressed in seaside style, with comfy chairs and a coastal mural, the kind of spot to sit with a coffee and watch the weather roll through. A kitchen, breakfast, WiFi and a washing machine are all part of the deal.

The location

Burray is one of the linked southern isles, joined to the Orkney mainland by the Churchill Barriers, so you get the feel of an island without the ferry. Just along from the suite there's a wide white-sand beach looking across the bay to little green holms, ideal for a morning walk. The Fossil and Heritage Centre and the famous Italian Chapel are both close by, and Kirkwall is a comfortable drive across the barriers. There's plenty more to explore across Orkney from here.
