Orkney Lux Lodges - Hoy Lodge

Hoy Lodge is one of the Orkney Lux Lodges at Stromness, a handsome timber-clad pod with a curved roof and characterful arched windows. It's named for the island it looks toward, and the whole place is built around comfort and that west-Orkney view. Pull up on the gravel and you've arrived somewhere genuinely special.

Inside

The interior is lined in pale timber that gives it real warmth. The bed is the centrepiece, dressed in crisp white linen with a faux-fur throw and layered cushions, set beneath an arched gable window, and there's often a bottle of fizz and glasses laid out to welcome you. Little touches lift it further, Sea Kelp toiletries in the bathroom, a Bose speaker for your music, a plant or two. There's a TV and WiFi as well.

Where you'll sleep

It's a one-bedroom lodge for two, with two well-appointed bathroom spaces so there's no scrum in the morning.

Step outside

You've a private hot tub on the deck, perfect after a day in the wind, and the outlook takes in the NorthLink ferry gliding across the sound with the Hoy hills, sometimes snow-capped, rising behind. The coastal path and quiet single-track lanes, complete with the odd red phone box, are right there for walking or cycling.

The setting

You're close to Stromness, its harbour, museum and the Scrabster ferry, with the west mainland's beaches and Neolithic sites within easy reach.
