About this property

Thorvald is a smart barn-style conversion at Finstown, finished to a high standard and styled with a quiet, contemporary touch. Reached by a flight of external stone steps, it makes a calm, grown-up retreat for two in one of Orkney's most central villages.

Inside

The interiors feel fresh and considered — pale walls, warm wood floors and good-quality finishes throughout. Clever touches like a sliding oak barn door and a tidy luggage rack show the conversion has been thought through properly. There's a fitted kitchen and a TV, with everything you need to cook and unwind in comfort.

Where you'll sleep

The single bedroom is dressed beautifully: a wide bed with a tan upholstered headboard, layered white linen and grey tasselled cushions, flanked by matching bedside lamps. A second made-up bed with a brass frame, tartan cushions and a checked wool throw adds a cosy, Highland feel. Soft lighting and a botanical print keep it restful.

Step outside

A private decked patio with a table and chairs sits behind a low stone wall, sheltered enough to sit out with a drink and look across to the green Orphir-side hills. A glass storm lantern on the table sets the tone for a still Orkney evening.

The setting

Finstown sits roughly halfway between Kirkwall and Stromness, which makes it one of the handiest bases on the Mainland — you're within easy reach of either town and most of the island's headline sites. The village itself has a shop and a friendly local feel, and the surrounding countryside of Finstown is lovely for a wander.

Perfect for

A couple after a stylish, peaceful self-catering base with parking, Wi-Fi and a private patio — central enough to explore all of Orkney without long drives.
