The cottage is bright and practical, with a well-equipped kitchen in cream units — electric oven and hob, window over the sink — and a separate dining area seating six around the table, with sea-themed prints on the walls. It's a homely, easy space, the kind that suits a family settling in for a week with the radio on and dinner on the go.

Where you'll sleep

Across three bedrooms there's room for five. The main double has grey bedding, a dark wood headboard and a tall mirror to catch the light; another room is set up with a pine-framed single and framed Orkney prints. The shower room is modern and well finished, with a large glass enclosure, a vanity unit and wood-effect flooring.

Step outside

Step out the front and the view opens straight onto the bay across the road — calm water, low green hills on the far shore and parking right by the door. On a clear day it's a fine spot to stand with a coffee and watch the light move over the water.

The setting

St Marys is a small Holm village on the east Mainland, sitting beside the first of the Churchill Barriers — the causeways that link the South Isles — with the famous Italian Chapel close at hand. Kirkwall is a short drive away, making this a handy yet peaceful base for touring all of Orkney.
