Inside

The kitchen is bright and properly equipped — electric oven and hob, microwave, washing machine and a wooden dining table set under a feature clock, with cheery seagull-print seat cushions and a wall painted soft blue. It's an easy room to cook and eat breakfast in, with everything to hand for a self-catered stay.

Where you'll sleep

Both bedrooms have been styled with care. The double sits against a deep teal wall hung with whale prints, dressed in crisp white linen with patterned cushions and a lamp on each side. The second is a twin with a forest-green feature wall, hexagonal mirror and matching velvet throws and cushions. The bathroom is fresh and white with a bath and shower over, a heated rail and a few plants on floating shelves. There are 2 bathrooms in total.

Step outside

Out the back is a paved patio with a rattan corner sofa and a low glass table — a sheltered spot for a morning coffee — leading onto a fenced lawn with a painted blue shed. Private and tidy, it's a genuine bonus for a town property.

You're a short walk from the heart of Kirkwall, the main town of Orkney, with its sandstone cathedral, working harbour, independent shops and the Pickaquoy leisure centre right on the doorstep. Ferries and the airport are both close by for day trips out to the isles.
