The Orkney Pod
About this property
Pull up on the gravel and you're already part of the view. The Orkney Pod sits on a working farm above the water, with a sweep of grass running down towards the sea loch and big skies that put on a proper show at sunset. The double doors open straight onto that outlook, so the first thing you do is stand on the step and take it in.
Inside
This is a compact one-room pod, and it's been kept simple and practical. There's a fold-out cabinet that holds the essentials – glasses, mugs, crockery and an air fryer – so you can make breakfast or a light supper without fuss, and folding chairs to pull up wherever the light is best. A throw and cushions soften things, and there's WiFi if you need to stay in touch. It's the kind of space that works because it doesn't try to do too much.
Where you'll sleep
The pod sleeps two, with sleeping space tucked into the one room. The shower room is small and tiled, with a glass shower enclosure, basin and a mirror – everything you need after a day out on the bike or exploring the coast.
Step outside
The setting is the star here. From the doorway you look across fenced grazing to the loch and the low hills beyond, and the gravel apron gives you somewhere to park right at the door. Watching the sun drop behind the water from this spot is reason enough to come.
The setting
You're in open countryside just outside Stromness, with the old harbour town and its flagstone streets, ferry pier and galleries a short drive away. Cyclists in particular will find this a handy base for the West Mainland's quiet roads.
Perfect for
A couple after a back-to-basics rural escape – walkers, cyclists and anyone who'd rather watch a sea-loch sunset than fill their evening with anything else.
