The Steading

The Steading is something special — a strikingly modern home raised above the shoreline near Stromness, with a timber-framed deck and floor-to-ceiling glass angled straight out at the sea. Pull up on the gravel, climb the steps to the raised terrace and the whole point of the place becomes clear: that wide, ever-changing view across the water, with seals bobbing offshore and the cliffs of Hoy on the horizon.

Inside

The heart of the house is a light, vaulted open-plan space built around a beautiful exposed stone feature wall. There is a generous oak dining table with seating for the whole party, softened by fresh flowers and a runner, leading through to a comfortable lounge with sofas set to catch the view. Warm wooden floors run throughout, and the big windows pull the sea and the open sky right into the room.

Where you'll sleep

Three bedrooms sleep up to six, with two bathrooms between them — plenty of room for a family or two couples travelling together to spread out and settle in.

Step outside

The raised deck is the real draw, with comfortable seating to sit out with a coffee and watch the light move across the water. Below, a sheltered area and a lawn give the kids and the dog space to play, and the sea is just beyond the wall.

The setting

This stretch of coast near Stromness is wonderfully quiet, yet you are within easy reach of the town's harbour, galleries and the ferry to Hoy — close enough to walk to the Old Man of Hoy and watch the grey seals along the shore.
