Tofts sits on Burray with one of those Orkney outlooks that makes you slow right down – a detached bungalow on a generous gravel plot, looking out over grazing fields to the sea. There's a separate garage for storing bikes or gear, plenty of parking, and an immediate sense of space and quiet the moment you step out of the car.

Inside

The living room is warm and well put together, with sage-green walls, two comfortable sofas, an electric stove set in an oak surround and a large window framing the water beyond. The kitchen-diner is the hub of the house: solid wood units, a dishwasher and washing machine, and an oak table seating six on a tiled floor, with the sea visible again through the window over the sink. WiFi runs throughout.

Where you'll sleep

Tofts has three bedrooms and sleeps six across two bathrooms. The main bedroom is restful and roomy, with a large bed dressed in white with tartan cushions, a pine wardrobe and bedside lamps. The rooms are calm and comfortable – easy to settle into after a day out.

Step outside

The real treat is the view. From the windows and the surrounding fields you look out across fenced grazing to the firth, with an oil rig sometimes anchored on the horizon and the hills of the Mainland beyond – a genuinely lovely coastal panorama, especially in the low evening light.

The setting

Burray is linked by the Churchill Barriers to the rest of Orkney, so you're well placed for the Italian Chapel, beaches and an easy run to Kirkwall.
