Valhaven Apartment 1 occupies part of a handsome stone building – the former Murray Arms Hotel – right on the main street of St Margaret's Hope. It's a self-contained apartment within a characterful old hotel, so you get the privacy of your own space alongside the solid, traditional feel of a building that's been at the centre of village life for years.

Rooms & comfort

The living room is comfortable and relaxed, with soft corduroy sofas, a wood-topped chest for a coffee table, a wall-mounted TV, a sideboard and a dining table by the window – and an exposed brick chimney breast that gives it real character. The bedroom has a double bed in calm grey tones, with a further sleeping area set up with a TV, dresser and open clothes rails, so the apartment sleeps four in all. There's a neat modern shower room with a glass enclosure, basin and toilet, plus a kitchenette corner kitted out with a cooker, microwave, air fryer and toaster for cooking in. WiFi, a washer and parking are all included.

The location

You're in the middle of St Margaret's Hope, one of Orkney's prettiest villages, with its harbour, shops and eateries on your doorstep and the Pentland Ferries terminal close by for trips to the mainland. South Ronaldsay's beaches and the Churchill Barriers are an easy drive.

Good to know

This is an apartment within a larger building rather than a standalone house, so expect the convenience and central setting that comes with that – step out of the door and you're straight into the village. The full kitchen facilities and washer make it easy for longer stays.
