Victoria Cottage is a tidy, freshly done town house on Victoria Road, a comfortable self-catering base a short stroll from the centre of Kirkwall. The living room is a relaxed spot to unwind, with a deep velvet-grey sofa, a matching chaise, a wood coffee table and a wall-mounted TV in a neat alcove. A glazed internal door and a large window keep things bright. Just off it, the kitchen is well equipped with a built-in oven and hob, fridge-freezer, kettle and toaster, and there is a drop-leaf dining table — complete with a cheerful Highland cow print on the wall — plus a washing machine and microwave for longer stays.

Where you'll sleep

There are two double bedrooms, both calm and comfortable. One is dressed with a padded headboard, mustard velvet cushions and a pair of bedside lamps; the other is bright and simple with a solid oak chest of drawers and fresh towels laid out ready. The cottage sleeps four in all.

The setting

Victoria Road is an easy walk from the heart of Orkney's main town, so St Magnus Cathedral, the shops, harbour and ferries are all close at hand while you stay somewhere quiet and residential.
