The living room is bright and tasteful, with a grey sofa, a wall-mounted TV and alcove shelving filled with books and plants, all arranged around a big picture window that looks straight out over the water. A round table with fresh flowers gives somewhere to eat or sit with a coffee, and a lantern-style lamp adds a soft glow in the evening. The window seat is the star — set up with little maritime touches, decoys, binoculars and a Scapa Special tray — and it's the natural place to settle and watch the bay change through the day.

Step out and the sea is on your doorstep. There's a sandy beach within easy reach, calm sheltered water for a gentle stroll, and some of the loveliest sunsets in Orkney looking back across the bay towards the ferry pier and the village lights.

You're in the heart of St Margaret's Hope, one of Orkney's prettiest villages on South Ronaldsay, with its waterfront, shop, places to eat and the Pentland Ferries crossing to the Scottish mainland.
