Woodwick Mill Cottage

Woodwick Mill Cottage is a single-storey stone conversion near Evie, and it's a striking little building — a long, low cottage with a round stone roundel at one end, dry-stone walling alongside and a clipped lawn running up to the door under big open skies. You arrive into level ground with grass on every side, the kind of quiet rural spot Orkney does so well.

Inside

The heart of the cottage is a bright open-plan living space. A leather sofa sits facing a deep-set window that frames the green fields and a dry-stone wall outside, with a wooden coffee table on a rug and a TV to one side. The kitchen runs along the back with oak units, an integrated oven and a glass-fronted display cabinet, opening straight onto a dining table set for meals — sociable and easy, with everything to hand. A washer covers longer stays.

Where you'll sleep

Sleeping three across two bedrooms, the rooms are restful and nicely finished. The main bedroom has a wooden-framed double dressed in soft grey, twin bedside lamps and a coastal print above the bed, with a glimpse through to the sitting area. The second is a single with a cheerful yellow throw and rabbit-print cushions — a lovely room for a child. Towels are set out ready.

Step outside

The grounds are part of the appeal: wide lawns wrapping the cottage, dry-stone walls and that distinctive round tower, all under wide Orkney skies. A peaceful place to sit out and watch the light change.

The setting

Evie lies on the north-west of the Orkney Mainland, close to the Broch of Gurness, the Brough of Birsay and fine coastal walks. There's plenty more to explore across Orkney from here.
