Woodwick Mill - Kiln & Sheafy Apartments

Woodwick Mill is a handsome conversion of an old stone mill near Evie, and it makes a real impression on arrival — a tall, gabled stone building with slate roofs and roof lights, sitting in open green ground with the Orkney hills rising behind. There's a wide tarmac courtyard with wooden benches and seating outside the doors, the sort of place you'll linger on a still evening.

Inside

The Kiln and Sheafy apartments make the most of the original mill character with bright, contemporary interiors. The living space is open and comfortable — a large corner sofa heaped with cushions, framed Orkney prints on the walls (the Stones of Stenness among them), a coffee table on a colourful rug and a separate oak dining table with chairs. The kitchen and dining flow together, and there's a washer for the basics, so it works equally well for a weekend or a longer family stay.

Where you'll sleep

Sleeping up to six, the bedrooms are calm and well kept. There's a double with a wooden bed frame, navy throw and floral cushions flanked by oak bedside tables, a fresh twin room with matching pine beds and seaside-toned pillows, and a further cosy double dressed in red and white with a window view. Towels are laid out ready on the beds.

Step outside

The setting is the draw — wide lawns, the courtyard seating and big Orkney skies, with the mill's stone walls and roof lights catching the light. It's a peaceful spot to sit out with a drink after a day on the road.
